UNESCO Establishes Pencaksilat as Intangible Cultural Heritage

Jakarta, Silatjabar.com,- UNESCO establishes the pencak silat tradition as an intangible cultural heritage. Pencak silat is known to be one of the martial arts, a unique Indonesian tradition from generation to generation.
As written statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Bogota, Friday (12/13/2019), pencak silat was determined as intangible cultural heritage in the 14th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, which took place in Bogota, Colombia December 9-14, 2019.

Pencak silat is considered to have all the elements that make up intangible cultural heritage. Pencak silat consists of oral traditions; performing arts, rituals and festivals; traditional crafts; social knowledge and practice as well as local wisdom.
Indonesian Permanent Delegation representative for UNESCO, Prof. Surya Rosa Putra said that pencak silat is not just a martial art but is a way of life for the perpetrators.
“Pencak Silat teaches us to be able to establish a good relationship with God, fellow humans and the environment. Although pencak silat teaches attacking techniques, but the most important thing is pencak silat also teaches us to be able to restrain and maintain harmony, “Surya said.

The establishment of the martial arts tradition as an intangible cultural heritage is a joint effort of a number of parties both the central and regional governments as well as various silat communities and colleges in a number of provinces in Indonesia. The effort consists of collecting and submitting data, workshops, to the preparation and negotiation of nominated documents.
At present there are communities, colleges and martial arts festivals in 52 countries in the world. According to talks between the Minister of Sports, Ernesto Lucena and the Indonesian Ambassador to Colombia, Priyo Iswanto, an exhibition forum will be held in February 2020 to introduce pencak silat to the people of Colombia.
With the establishment of pencak silat, Indonesia currently has 11 UNESCO intangible cultural heritage. Indonesia has 9 cultural and natural heritage sites, and 15 Indonesian biosphere reserves. That number is the largest among the ASEAN countries. ***
